When former business partners Vic Puccinelli (Dean Martin) and Alvin Korwin (Jerry Lewis) enlist in the U.S. Army, they have different ambitions. Puccinelli, who has made the rank of sergeant, wants to see action rather than the drudgery of his current post. On the other hand, Korwin, who is a klutz, wants to stay out of combat and near his family in the United States. However, they both have to deal with stern Sgt. McVey (Mike Kellin) while also preparing for an Army variety show.

In the American West, Willet Gashade (Warren Oates), a former bounty hunter, and Coley Boyard (Will Hutchins), his dim-witted partner, are approached by a secretive young woman (Millie Perkins) who offers them money to guide her through the desert but refuses to discuss why she is traveling. The group embarks on the journey and is eventually joined by Billy Spear (Jack Nicholson), a volatile gunslinger the woman has also hired. The only question is why.

While the duo must work together to battle the murderous revolutionary, they also come to blows over their competing love for Kit Carson Holliday.

Cowboys Wes (Jack Nicholson), Vern (Cameron Mitchell) and Otis (Tom Filer) are journeying through Texas when they have the unfortunate luck of meeting a gang of robbers who have just held up a stagecoach and lynched the driver. The local sheriff’s posse surrounds them before they can get away, and Wes and his friends are unable to convince the lawmen they’re not part of the gang. After a fierce shootout, Wes and Vern flee — with the vigilante sheriff hot on their trail.
